This map shows the population density of districts located in and around the Icelandic capital, Reykjavík, in 2017. Population density in this map is calculated as inhabitants per square kilometre.
As the capital of Iceland, Reykjavík and its surroundings make up by far the largest urban agglomerations in the country.
The dark brown shading represents a high population density, while the light brown shading shows low population density.
The five districts with the highest population density, above 3000 inhabitants per square kilometre, are Vesturbær Norður, Vesturbær suður, Efra og Neðra-Breiðholt, Digranes, and Laugardalur vestur. In contrast, many of the outer districts around Reykjavík have rather low population density, below 500 inhabitants per square kilometre. There are also pockets of substantially high population density outside the most central parts of the city area , in particular Hafnarfjörður norður along the coast in the western part of the capital area.
The district entities used for this map correspond to the statistical output areas defined in census of Iceland from 2011 (24 areas defined in total, following official district boundaries whenever possible).
