During the last decades the municipal division in Iceland has been changed on a regular basis, during some periods the have even been municipal boundary changes each year.
The upper map shows the municipal mergers for each decade during the years 1984-1984. In several cases, the same municipality has been merged with another municipality, and by that turning into a larger unit, during each of these three decades. Very few municipalities in Iceland were unaffected by these reforms.
The lower map includes municipal boundary changes during the last decade. Such mergers resulted in new municipal boundaries and units in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. Each new unit created from these mergers can be identified in the map by its respective colour.
