This map shows urban connectivity by road, rail and air in the BSR in 2011. The colour of the circles represents the number of cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants that can be reached within five hours travel time and the size of the circle represents the population of the city itself. Cities are not only places for the provision of functions and services, but also provide gateways (airports, IC stations, motorways) to connect people with other cities, both nationally and abroad. The more cities that can be reached through a gateway (degree of connectivity), the more attractive this gateway city is. In many BSR countries there is a North-South gradient in urban connectivity, with cities in the North being less connected to Europe than their Southern counterparts closer to central Europe. German and Polish cities make up the top 10 gateways in the BSR and Copenhagen is the main air hub.
