The map shows protected areas under either national (IUCN categories IA) or under the Wetlands (Ramsar) Convention, as well as population per settlement in the Arctic region as of 2006. Murmansk, Anchorage, Reykjavik and Norilsk are the largest settlements in terms of size of population in the region while a number of small settlements with less than 10 000 inhabitants is visible in general in all regions and along the coasts of Iceland and western Greenland.
