There are almost 600 significant metal ore deposits in the Nordic Arctic Region and at the beginning of 2015 29 of those where open mines. Size of the open mines varies. There are five very large, 12 large, 7 medium sized and 5 small mines.
Especially the production of iron ore is remarkable. At the moment almost 90 % of the European need of iron ore comes from Northern Sweden, LKAB in Kiruna and Malmberget in Gällivare being the largest sites. Northern Sweden and Finland contribute also to significant parts of the EU´s production of gold, silver, zinc and copper (Aitik). Furthermore, chrome production in Kemi in northern Finland has great significance for the production of stainless steel.
