This map shows the Euthrophication levels in the Baltic Sea from 2007-2011. During this period almost entire BSR experienced poor eutrophication levels, with the exception of coastal areas in the Gulf of Bothnia. Despite all efforts in agriculture to minimise phosphate entries over the last decades, eutrophication processes in the Baltic Sea continued. This is partly due to the late onset of long-term effects (phosphates are carried by rivers into the Baltic Sea), partly because of self-reinforcing processes within the Baltic Sea itself.

HEAT: HELCOM Eutrophication Assessment Tool (vers. 3.0). A total of 189 stations, sites and basins have been classified as either good environmental status (not or less affected by eutrophication), or below good status (moderate, poor or bad status), resulting in a classification with two classes only. © HELCOM.
