Between the 1950s and 1970s economic growth and the emergence of welfare states were seen across the Nordic countries. The expansion of tertiary education to new parts of the population – and to new locations – became an essential foundation of these new welfare societies. The process was consolidated between 1990 and 2009 with a series of important institutional reforms in tertiary education in all countries. A growth in the number of high education institutions in the Nordic Countries is clearly visible in these periods as shown in this map.
