The total population change is a combination of birth, death and migration to and from the region. Due to increasing life-expectancy and an increased importance of international migration, the Nordic population has increase rather rapidly during the last decades at the national level. However, the levels of regional variation are remarkable. From a Nordic point of view the Nordic Arctic have relatively high birth rates. There is a trend where high natural population increase is compensating for negative net-migration. This keeps the total population increasing. For most of the municipalities and counties, migration is the main driver of population change.
