This map shows self-assessed general health status in the Baltic Sea Region in 2014 based on responses to the question “How is your health in general?”. In regions shaded with lighter colours inhabitants, on average, rated their health as better than regions shaded with darker colours.
In many regions of the Baltic States, as well as in northwest Russia, inhabitants assess their current health status as being comparatively poor. At the other end of the scale, the inhabitants of most regions in the Nordic countries, in particular those in Sweden, assess their health status as being comparatively good.
Overall, there is a slight but not considerable bias towards better self-assessment of health in more urbanised regions than in rural regions. This difference however could very well be explained simply by higher levels of income in urban areas. Nonetheless, exceptions to this are also numerous.
