The map shows the population density at NUTS3 level in 2009, including countries/territories in the EU as well as Greenland, Iceland Norway, neighbouring countries in the Balkans and Turkey, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldavia. The concentration of population in the geographical core of Europe is evident and a concentration of the highest densities is visible close to the boundaries between Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium as well as in all national capital regions and overseas territories of the EU. Lowest densities are found in the northernmost parts of Scandinavia, Russia, Scotland as well as in Iceland, Greenland, central Norway and French Guiana.
