This map shows the percentage of the population aged 65 and over as a share of the working age population (15-64 years) across the Nordic Region at the regional and municipal level in 2016. This figure is commonly referred to as the old age dependency ratio.
The red shading represents the percentage, with darker colours corresponding to a higher percentage of the population aged 65 and over as a share of the working age population, and lighter colours corresponding to lower percentage. The Nordic average is 29,7%.
The map highlights a clear spatial pattern with respect to old age dependency rates in 2016. Relatively high rates can be found in a large number of municipalities in Finland and Sweden. Municipalities with more moderate rates can be found in Greenland, Iceland, Denmark, and Norway. A similar picture is evident at the regional level.
