This map shows demographic vulnerability in Nordic-Baltic municipalities based on the indicator age-group 65 years and over. Under this indicator, municipalities are deemed to be vulnerable when the percentage of the population aged 65 years and over is more than 19 percent. In the majority of municipalities in both Nordic and Baltic countries the share of population in this age group is above this threshold. The aging population is a concern across Nordic and Baltic, although the situation in the Baltic countries is better overall than that of the Nordic countries. Sweden and Finland in particular have many municipalities with troublingly high portions of their population in this age group. The municipalities with the smallest shares of their population in this age group can be observed mainly in the capital areas and some growing city-regions.
Age group 65 years and over is one of 10 indicators used to measure demographic vulnerability in the Nordic-Baltic Region. The map “Nordic-Baltic Demographic Vulnerabilities”, takes in all 10 indicators to provide an overall picture of demographic vulnerabilities at the municipal level.
