This map shows demographic vulnerability in Nordic-Baltic municipalities based on the indicator age group 0-14 years. Under this indicator, municipalities are deemed to be vulnerable when the percentage of the population aged 0-14 years is less than 17.81 percent. This is the case for the majority of municipalities in both Nordic and Baltic countries, with municipalities in the Baltic countries having significantly small shares of their populations in this age group. This suggests that, unless the low birth-rate is compensated for by other factors such as in-migration, the population of the Nordic-Baltic countries will drop. In the Nordic Region, the largest relative share of people aged 0-14 years in the population can be observed in the capital areas, the south-western part of Norway, and the middle-western part of Finland.
Age group 0-14 years is one of 10 indicators used to measure demographic vulnerability in the Nordic-Baltic Region. The map “Nordic-Baltic Demographic Vulnerabilities”, takes in all 10 indicators to provide an overall picture of demographic vulnerabilities at the municipal level.
